Suspension and Steering Repair in Missoula, MT

Your suspension and steering decide how the vehicle handles, how it stops, and how long your tires last. When parts wear out, the signs creep in slowly: a new clunk over bumps, a little more play in the wheel, tires wearing on one edge.

We find the part that's actually worn and show it to you before replacing anything. Suspension work is easy to oversell, because a lot of parts sit close together and sound alike. We'd rather fix the one that's bad.

Signs of suspension, steering, or tire trouble

  • Clunking or knocking over bumps.
  • Steering that feels loose, wanders, or needs constant correction.
  • The vehicle pulling to one side while driving.
  • Bouncing that continues after bumps, or the nose diving when you brake.
  • Uneven tire wear, especially on the inside or outside edge.
  • Squeaks or groans when turning.
  • A tire that keeps losing air.

What we check

We get the vehicle on the lift and check for play in the ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, and wheel bearings, and look at the shocks and struts for leaks and wear. We also check sway bar links and mounts, which are common sources of clunks and simple to replace.

On the steering side we look at the steering rack or gearbox, the power steering system, and the column connections. A road test helps us match what you feel to what we find.

Tire wear tells a story. Wear on one edge, cupping, or feathering points to alignment or worn parts, and we'll explain what your tires are telling us.

For a tire that keeps losing air, we find the cause, whether it's a nail, a leaking valve stem, or a bead that isn't sealing against the wheel. When the damage is in the tread area, it can usually be repaired. Damage in the sidewall or near the shoulder can't be safely repaired, and we'll tell you if that's what we find.

What can wait and what can't

Don't put these off

  • Loose steering, or clunking from a ball joint or tie rod, since a failure can affect steering control
  • A tire with sidewall damage or a bulge
  • A wheel bearing that's grinding or getting louder
  • Power steering fluid leaking quickly

Often fine to wait

  • Shocks or struts that are getting soft but not leaking
  • A minor squeak from a dry bushing
  • Slightly uneven tire wear that we've traced and are keeping an eye on

Anything that affects steering control gets priority. The rest we will sort out with you.

Rough roads and worn parts

Potholes, gravel roads, and winter frost heaves are hard on suspension parts and tires. A hard hit can bend a part or knock things out of adjustment even when nothing looks broken.

We work on all makes and models, foreign and domestic, from cars to work trucks.

Suspension and Steering Repair questions

What causes a clunking noise over bumps?

Common causes are worn sway bar links, ball joints, control arm bushings, or strut mounts. Some are simple fixes and some are more involved. We find the one that's actually loose before replacing anything.

Can you repair a flat tire?

Often, yes. A puncture in the tread area from a nail or screw can usually be repaired. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder can't be safely repaired, and the tire needs to be replaced.

How do I know if I need new shocks or struts?

Signs include bouncing after bumps, the nose diving when you brake, body roll in turns, fluid leaking from the shock or strut, and cupped tire wear. We can check yours and tell you how they look.

Why are my tires wearing unevenly?

Usually alignment, worn suspension parts, or tire pressure. The wear pattern helps us tell which. Fixing the cause matters, because new tires will wear the same way if the problem stays.

We show you before we fix it

Before any work starts, we walk you into the shop and show you what we found. If something can wait, we'll tell you.
