Auto Electrical Repair in Missoula, MT

Electrical problems are some of the most frustrating ones to live with. A battery that keeps dying, lights that flicker, or a power window that works one day and not the next can have causes all over the vehicle.

They are also some of the easiest to throw parts at. We test the battery, the charging system, and the circuits involved before replacing anything, so you pay for the fix and not for guesses.

Signs of an electrical problem

  • Slow cranking, or a click and no start.
  • A battery that dies overnight or after the vehicle sits a few days.
  • Dim or flickering headlights and dash lights.
  • A battery or charging warning light.
  • Fuses that keep blowing.
  • Power windows, locks, or accessories that work only some of the time.
  • A burning plastic smell, which should be checked right away.

What we check

We start with the battery and charging system, because they affect everything else. We test the battery's condition under load, check the alternator's output, and inspect the cables and terminals for corrosion and loose connections.

If the battery keeps going dead, we test for parasitic draw, which is current the vehicle pulls while it's parked. A module that won't go to sleep, a trunk or glovebox light that stays on, or an aftermarket accessory can drain a good battery.

For circuits that misbehave, we use wiring diagrams and a meter to trace the problem to the switch, connector, ground, or wire that's actually failing. Corroded grounds and damaged connectors are common, and they're far cheaper to fix than a module that was never bad.

When we find it, we show you the failed part or the damaged wiring before we fix it.

What can wait and what can't

Don't put these off

  • A burning smell or melted wiring
  • A charging warning light while driving, since the battery can run down and leave you stranded
  • Headlights, brake lights, or turn signals not working
  • Fuses that blow again right after being replaced

Often fine to wait

  • A battery that tests weak but still starts reliably, if you plan to replace it soon
  • An interior accessory that's intermittent but isn't draining the battery
  • Light corrosion on the battery terminals, which we can clean

If your battery tests weak heading into winter, we'll tell you, and you can decide whether to replace it now or keep an eye on it.

Batteries and Montana winters

Cold weather is hard on batteries. A battery loses cranking power as the temperature drops, while a cold engine takes more power to turn over, so a weak battery that got by all fall often gives out on the first cold morning.

When a battery does need replacing, we fit one sized for your vehicle and check the charging system at the same time, so a bad alternator doesn't kill the new battery too. We work on all makes and models, foreign and domestic.

Auto Electrical Repair questions

How do I know if it is my battery or my alternator?

A battery problem usually shows up as slow cranking or no start, especially after the vehicle sits. An alternator problem often shows up while driving, with a warning light, dimming lights, or a battery that keeps going dead even after it's charged or replaced. Testing both tells us for sure.

How long does a car battery last?

It varies with climate, driving habits, and the battery itself. Short trips and cold winters both shorten battery life. We can test yours and tell you where it stands.

Why does my battery keep dying?

The usual causes are a battery that's worn out, a charging system that isn't keeping it charged, or something drawing power while the vehicle is parked. We test for all three.

Can you replace my battery?

Yes. We test the old one first to make sure the battery is really the problem, then check the charging system with the new one installed.

We show you before we fix it

Before any work starts, we walk you into the shop and show you what we found. If something can wait, we'll tell you.
